  • After the lesson, the student practices at home and completes written assignments.

Is 1:1 Music Therapy or Group Music Therapy better for me?*

1:1 Music Therapy...
  • is tailored to the individual client's strengths, needs, and preferences.
  • does not necessarily provide opportunities to work on social goals and objectives with peers.
  • is appropriate for clients who are uncomfortable in group settings.
  • usually costs more per client than group music therapy.
Group Music Therapy...
  • is tailored to the group's strengths, needs, and preferences.
  • does not provide as much individualized attention as 1:1 music therapy.
  • is especially appropriate for clients with social goals and objectives.
  • usually costs less per client than 1:1 music therapy.
*The music therapist can help you to determine the best option for you during the assessment process.

What's the difference between Lessons and Adaptive Lessons?

In Lessons...
  • The focus is on developing musical skills and learning how to play an instrument.
  • Students are expected to learn how to read sheet music and play with the correct technique and fingering.
In Adaptive Lessons...
  • The focus is on developing musical skills and learning how to play an instrument.
  • The music, instrument, and/or expectations are modified depending on the needs of the student. Such needs may include: visual impairment, short attention span, difficulty with spatial awareness, or physical disabilities
Examples of Adaptations include:
  • Color-coded or labeled music
  • Simplified arrangements of music
  • Color-coded stickers or labels for notes on the instrument
  • Adaptive devices such as the ChordBuddy or oversize picks

At Rubato Music Therapy, we believe in helping students to be as independent as possible, while ensuring that lessons are accessible for everyone who wants to learn how to play an instrument. Lessons and Adaptive Lessons exist on a continuum. We begin with standard lessons that focus on reading sheet music, and adapt if necessary. Sometimes, the need for modifications is apparent from the beginning. Other times, it is not apparent for a few months, or even a year, and arises as new concepts are presented in the music. In general, if a student has spent weeks or month unsuccessfully trying to master a skill that most peers would acquire in one or two lessons, we recommend some level of adaptation in order to further their progress.
